Microsoft is currently testing a new Energy Saver feature for Windows 11 aimed at assisting users in prolonging the battery life of their portable computers.
This feature is presently available to Insiders in the Canary Channel who have installed Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26002. The Energy Saver feature introduces advanced battery-saving capabilities, allowing users to extend battery lifespan by minimizing energy consumption and optimizing system performance.
Accessible through the Quick Settings menu within the system tray, users can manually enable this feature or set it to activate automatically when the device’s battery level reaches a predefined threshold.
Moreover, this energy-conserving mode can be configured to operate even when the device is connected to a power source, enabling desktop users to reduce energy consumption and lower their energy bills.
Microsoft’s Amanda Langowski and Brandon LeBlanc stated, “It is an easy way to extend battery life and reduce energy use by trading off some system performance.” They highlighted that, although designed to optimize battery life, the Energy Saver will be available for use when PCs are plugged in, catering to users aiming to conserve energy consistently.
For users not enrolled in the Windows 11 Insider program, the built-in battery-saver feature can still be utilized to extend a computer’s battery life. Activating this mode temporarily disables power-intensive processes, such as automatic email and calendar synchronization, live tile updates, and inactive applications.
To activate the battery saver feature, users can navigate to Start > Settings > System > Power & battery. They can configure it to activate automatically at a specific battery level by selecting a custom level next to “Turn battery saver on automatically at.”
Microsoft also recommends additional measures such as setting a shorter duration for active displays, adjusting display brightness, managing background activity settings for apps, selecting a more efficient power mode, or enabling airplane mode when internet, Bluetooth, or other wireless connections are unnecessary.
In a related development, Microsoft has started rolling out the Copilot AI assistant to Windows 10 Insiders with eligible non-managed systems running Windows 10 22H2 Home and Pro editions. However, the confirmed end of support date for Windows 10, October 14, 2025, remains unchanged.
